Rebekah Rojcewicz was called to Memphis from her then home in Washington, D.C. to train catechists in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in the spring of 1993. Calvary Episcopal Church sponsored the two-year course. Afterward, our Catechesis was established in several churches in Memphis including Calvary Episcopal, St. Mary’s Cathedral, Grace St. Luke’s, St. Michael’s, St. Peter, and St. Philip.
Thanks to the strong support from Dean C.B. Baker of St. Mary’s Cathedral and Bishop James Coleman, the Episcopal Diocese gave us an initial monetary gift to start a Good Shepherd Center. Our goal was to nurture the programs established in various churches and to continue training new catechists. We were also given space for our Center at St. Mary’s Cathedral and formally opened the Good Shepherd Center in Memphis in 1999.
In 2001 we were given a dream environment for our Center by the Church of the Holy Communion: a rent-free house on South Perkins. There we offered a model mid-week program for children, continued to train catechists, and nurtured existing programs in the Memphis area. We ran with a part-time staff, thanks to a grant from the Church Home Trust, along with other donations and fees collected. In 2005 we moved out when the property was needed for St. Mary’s School.
Since then the Good Shepherd Center has had the benefit of using many of our local churches to host courses. We have model atria at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and our office is located at St. Philip Episcopal Church. We continue to receive support from both the Episcopal Diocese of West Tennessee under the leadership of the Right Reverend Phoebe A. Roaf and the Catholic Diocese of Memphis under the leadership of Bishop David Tally.
